South African TikTok Star Sqiniseko Mvelase Shot Dead During Livestream
South Africans are in shock after the tragic and violent death of TikTok content creator Sqiniseko Mvelase, who was fatally shot while livestreaming to his followers on 29 May 2025.
Known for his outspoken reviews and commentary on maskandi music, Mvelase was engaging with his audience when the horrifying incident occurred. Originally from KwaMaphumulo in KwaZulu-Natal, he had recently moved to Nigel in Ekurhuleni—where the fatal shooting took place.
Viewers were reportedly stunned when gunshots rang out during the stream, which abruptly ended. A short clip circulating online captures the terrifying final seconds, with Mvelase seen attempting to flee before the screen cut to black. Reports suggest the attacker fired over 15 rounds.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Nevhuhulwi confirmed the investigation: “We can confirm a case of murder is being investigated,” he told the Daily Sun. As of now, the motive remains unclear.
Waves of grief and outrage have swept social media. His friend, Thabang Khumalo, shared that funeral arrangements were already underway just one day after the tragedy.
Reactions online have been mixed. While many expressed condolences, others reflected on the bold nature of Mvelase’s content. One user, @Wanda855669465, wrote: “I heard the guy was quite provocative. He would insult people and say what he wished to say to them. I guess it’s one of those he insulted, but condolences to his family, friends and followers.”
