Funke Akindele, renowned Nollywood actress and filmmaker, has reaffirmed her commitment to re-enter the political arena, expressing her unwavering dedication to public service despite her previous electoral defeat.
In a recent interview on the #WithChude podcast, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo, Akindele opened up about her transformative journey into politics and her aspirations for the future.
“I am glad I went into politics. And ask me, am I going to do it again? Oh, yes. Oh, I love it. I need to support, I need to give back, that is why I went into politics,” she stated passionately during the interview.
Akindele made her political debut in 2023 as the deputy governorship candidate for Lagos State under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), running alongside Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor). Although their campaign was unsuccessful, Akindele remained undeterred, emphasizing the valuable lessons she learned from the experience.
“Getting into it, seeing the violence, seeing the shouting. Then I started watching female politicians like Mummy Abike Dabiri and co. You know, the way they speak, and the way they command respect, authority. And I’m like, hey, you are not alone. You can do it,” she explained.
She highlighted how her political involvement deepened her understanding of governance and leadership, stating, “I stood, I spoke. I learned that from there, that you have to be bold. You have to be courageous. You have to be strong. What will be will be. Fear will only put you in a place. So, all this I learned from doing politics. And I got to know a lot of numbers. I got educated more, acquired more knowledge. You know, I’m reading more now, knowing more about my country, knowing more about my state.”
Beyond her political ambitions, Akindele continues to impact society through her Jenifa Foundation, which focuses on nurturing young talent and building youth skills for a better Nigeria. She believes that empowering young people is crucial for national development and has been actively involved in training them in various aspects of filmmaking.
Looking ahead, Akindele has announced plans to venture into biopics and epic movies in 2026, aiming to tell stories that resonate with the Nigerian populace. Her upcoming film, “Finding Me,” explores the journey of self-discovery and encourages individuals to live authentically, beyond societal expectations.
